New Zealand is the first Asian-Pacific country to legalise same sex marriage. Equality is now less than three hours away and thousands of gay and lesbian Australians are already planning to have their wedding in NZ. The difficulty is that these marriages will not be recognised in Australia. Australia’s laws about marriages in foreign countries say that same-sex marriages cannot be recognised here, even though straight marriages can.
Perhaps the very funny speech made by New Zealand MP Maurice Williamson can assist to influence our politicians!
